Baja California Sur, Mexico
The Baja California Sur is one of the 31 States of Mexico, occupying the part of the Baja California Peninsula south of the 28th parallel. It is bordered to the north by the state of Baja California, to the west by the Pacific Ocean, and to the east by the Gulf of California, also known as the Sea of Cortez. It is on one of the longest peninsulas in the world. Its only land link to the rest of Mexico is the transpeninsular highway. The state is also home to the tourist resorts of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. The peninsula was first called California in about 1538, when Hernan Cortes returned from a journey to the peninsula. Baja California Sur has a population of approximately 424,041 inhabitants (as of 2003) and is renown for its natural riches and its tourism. Cabo San LucasThe tourist and resort favorite of Baja Sur, Cabo San Lucas has grown into the must see stop of Mexico. The Marina draws tourists to the sport fishing docks daily to view championship catches, boat excursions, designer boutiques, resorts and private villas, hip nightclubs, amazing reefs and dive areas unmatched anywhere else in the world, spectacular beaches, and literally unmatched scenery found anywhere else in the Baja Sur. Cabo San Lucas is the true endpoint of the Baja peninsula, where the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez come together. San Jose Del CaboSan Jose del Cabo is a small town dating back some 200 years and still maintains many of its original buildings with two feet thick walls, large shade trees and the look and feel of old Mexico rather than a modern, tourist port. Take a stroll down the streets of San Jose where you'll find quaint shops, beautiful art galleries and courtyard restaurants, secluded, away from the hustle of tourists. San Jose maintains its historic charm even today. Los CabosLos Cabos encompasses the entire tip of Baja, it literally means "the cape" consists of two towns connected by the corridor, one is San Jose del Cabo, the other Cabo San Lucas. Los Cabos is known worldwide as the marlin capital of the world because more stripped marlins can be caught within a twenty miles radius year round, and catches of over one thousand pounds are not uncommon! Fishing charters are abundant here, from small pangas (big rowboats with motors) to custom fitted state of the art luxury yachts with full crew and fishing gear. Todos SantosTodos Santos is located 1 hour south of La Paz & 1 hour north of Cabo San Lucas at the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains. Only two short miles away from the Pacific ocean, Todos Santos is rich in farm crops, palm groves, mango and avocado trees. With a history dating back over three hundred years, the small town boasts of painters, artisans, sculptors, and writers. Excellent dining, colonial buildings and missions, first class accommodations and spectacular beaches. The climate averages ten to fifteen degrees cooler than Cabo San Lucas or La Paz which makes Todos Santos an excellent vacation spot any time of year! |
